We’re in the middle of another round of Mercury Retrograde. This one started January 21st and will be over February 11, 2015, in two weeks. I believe this mischievous cosmic influence has many gifts for us if we relax and cooperate with the slow down and inner focus it offers.
Mercury Retrograde is an astrological phenomenon that happens about 3 times a year. For about 3 to 4 weeks, the planet Mercury appears to be going backward in the sky (retrograde.) Mercury is the planet that rules communication, contracts, business, information, trade and travel. It’s also notoriously known as the ‘trickster.’ As it’s doing its little backward dance it’s known to set off patterns of ‘backward-ness’ in our lives on planet earth too in those same areas it rules.
It is not unusual to hear a sigh of despair when you remind a friend that Mercury is going to go retrograde soon. Many of us are familiar with the malfunctions, breakdowns, delays and overall static which are common at this time. But we needn’t get down about it. Many astrologers that I tune in to are positive about Mercury Retrograde and have recommendations for making it a productive time. I agree. I have found it to be a cathartic time of rebalancing and regrouping if I work with it and stop resisting.
General Recommendations for Working with Mercury Retrograde
One of the astrologers I love to learn from is Gahl Sasson. He has some great guidelines for working with the trickster Mercury in its retrograde phase:
What to avoid:
~Signing documents
~Buying computers, electronics, cars, TV (anything digital that talks in the binary tongue)
~Initiating important projects
~Overbooking or scheduling yourself
~Publishing
~Starting anything that you would like to last longer then three weeks
What we can do:
~Edit
~Reorganize
~Sell or get rid of things you don’t need
~Let go of people and habits you do not need
~Revisit old projects, ideas or creative endeavors
~Reconnect with people from your past
~Do anything that starts with the prefix RE. For example: REvisit, REinvent, REdefine, REevaluate, REmember, REexamine
~Listen more than talk
~Be extra cautious, pay attention to details
~Take extra time to reach appointments
~Double, triple, edit what you write
~Think twice before answering a text, email, message, or any other form of communication
~Send packages with tracking and insurance
Embrace Mercury Retrograde – 7 Gifts It Has to Offer Us
I have come up with my own list of the gifts that I’ve discovered by embracing and not fighting good ol’ Merc Retro.
7) Connect more strongly to your spirit and Divinity – It’s a great opportunity to connect more deeply with Spirit… because you’ll be praying every day that Mercury Retrograde hurries up and gets done! Just kidding! This is a great time to connect more deeply to your own spirit and your Divine source through prayer, meditation, creativity and going within more. Life is not moving as ambitiously forward as usual, nor are we. We get a breather. Once again I refer to Gahl Sasson (see above) who puts it so well:“It is a powerful time for manifestation, prayer, sending wishes and good vibes to family members and friends. While Mercury gives us a hard time with mundane communication, he supports inner or spiritual messages. If you believe in Angels, they can now hear you better, if you believe in Higher-Self then it is now that you can sacrifice your ego to get closer to it.” In understanding and accepting Mercury Retrograde we can imagine a lot of static in those ‘mundane’ communications but pristine clarity in our radio signal to (and from) Divinity. What wonderful aha moments await as we dial in to the divine at this unique time?!
Meditation – Aligning Intention, Vision & Action
I wanted to let you know that I lead group guided meditations on Zoom and on teleconference every month. I also offer many classes and personalized psychic readings too. While we’re in the energy of Mercury Retrograde, it’s a great time to go within, strengthen your connection with Divinity and get clarity.
